Could you tell us why you decided to make a Warriors game using the Berserk manga?

Koinuma: Since the new Berserk anime is beginning in July, we thought we would create a game alongside the anime to really get the fans hyped up. From the early days I've read the Berserk manga and there are a lot of staff members including one of our directors that is a fan of the series so I just thought "Hey, we should try and make a Berserk game!".

Oh, and we also had a questionnaire printed on the December 3rd issue of Famitsu asking fans which IP would everyone like to see become a Musou game, in fact Berserk was on that list!

Koinuma: We already decided on the project prior to the questionnaire, lucky for us Berserk managed to rank in so we were relieved.

Everyone would agree that Guts and his gigantic sword would work well in a Warriors game environment. While we are on the subject, we only get to see Casca in the teaser trailer and so I want to ask how did you imagine the trailer?

Koinuma: It's exactly what I did with the Fist of the North Star Warriors teaser. We had a single scene where Yuria was falling and we decided to do the same concept with the Berserk teaser.

Wouldn't you say that the Teaser trailer was pretty sexy?

Koinuma: As everyone knows Berserk is both a very Gorey and erotic manga and so we want to reflect that in the game itself too.

Since it is a dark fantasy manga, we plan to go down the same road and give you a little taste of what is yet to come in game through the teaser. The scene were Casca is imprisoned had quite the impact to fans, same as the scene when Griffith changes, and because of this we decided to show the Casca scene as the original teaser.

Berserk is a long running manga with a very deep lore with dark interesting characters, how will you recreate this within the game?

Koinuma: A few years ago they created the Golden Age into three separate anime movies and since we were allowed to use them, we decided the story will begin from the Golden Age.

I would say this is where the true start of the story began but I also think it's a great starting off point when it comes to people who are interested in Berserk but don't know where to begin. Oh, and don't worry there will be plenty and plenty of scenes recreated from the manga!

What kind of taste will we get from the game?

Koinuma: I brought the game's main visual from the office and the graphics will be a modified version of this. We wanted a mix between the manga and anime's art and we came up with this.

What kind of person would really enjoy this game?

Koinuma: First and foremost, fans of Berserk will be the ones who will enjoy the game. During the game you'll be fighting humans as enemies then suddenly you'll be fighting Apostles, this is one of the major changes we wanted to make it more like a Berserk experience. We plan to implement a whole list of bosses such as Zodd or the Minotaur. There is a lot of Berserk stuffed in here to excite all those Berserk fans out there.

Guts sword-slinging style is more brutal than elegant, now will this project in the game?

Koinuma: We had a similar problem when developing Fist of the North Star Warriors. Most of the characters are heavy hitters themselves and we wanted to give a more realistic style to the hits. This gives a perfect balance that makes you feel the impact if your hits. We thought of this as we wanted to recreate the change between the Golden Age Guts and the Black Swordsman Guts's battle style.

When he becomes the Black Swordsman, he gets a boost which makes his attacks more elegant compared to before and we will show this in game.

Next I want to ask, what was the reason behind announcing the game at E3?

Koinuma: Well the last Berserk volume was released 3 years ago and the next one is coming out this year on June 24th and the only way we thought to announce it was on the cover slip around the book... since the games near completion we just thought "Ermm.. lets just announce it at E3..".

So are you planning on releasing the game outside of Japan?

Koinuma: If we can, then we will. As the teaser trailer is being shown worldwide we've reached 100,000 replays on YouTube, our whole channel has now 600,000 total views and just the teaser has hit a 1/6 of the views in a day shows me that we have a lot of Berserk fans looking forward to the game.

I'm excited to see more information asap!

Koinuma: The next volume of Berserk comes out on the 24th and alongside that we will introduce more about the game in next week's Famitsu so please look forward to the next following weeks!

Das nächste Interview, Play-Asia gibt sich alle Mühe! :)

Berserk Author Kentaro Miura Supervising Koei's Berserk Game, Aims to Keep The Game At a 17+ Rating and More

The new Gamer JP interviewwithKoei Tecmo's President Hisashi Koinuma about the upcoming Berserk title has been translated, and he's given a couple of interesting bits of information about ratings and Kentaro Miura's involvement with the title. Additionally, the interview seems to hint that the game may not have a base takeover system like the usual Warriors titles have. You can check out the translated interview below!

Koei Tecmo's Berserk will release Spetember 21st in Japan for PS3, PS4, and the PSVita. Keep an eye on the Play-Asia.com product pages as Japanese pre-orders will likely open this week.

Was your intention to create a game to go along with this year's upcoming Berserk anime?

Koinuma: The higher ups and I have actually discussed about creating a Berserk game quite a while before the anime had begun its concept. Although, much later we were approached by the Berserk anime's production team to ask if we could create a game based on Berserk as well. Personally as a very big Berserk fan I began looking into making a Berserk game a reality. I talked with various members of staff and as Berserk fans themselves they were all delighted to start on the project.

We were unsure when to announce the game itself as Mr. Miura had not released a new volume in three years and we always put an announcement of an IP's game on the outer slip of a manga book. Since we can't do that, we decided E3 was the closest event to announce it haha.

So you planned on a worldwide reveal?

Koinuma: We at Koei tend to reveal our games on a global scale like we did with our previous manga to game adaptation of "Attack on Titan". I feel it's best we reveal those types of games that way.

Is Mr. Miura interested in the game adaptation of his creation?

Koinuma: Since we announced Koei will be working on a Berserk Warriors, Mr. Miura has sent us a New Years Postcard every single year haha. Mr. Miura is a man grounded in reality and he really wanted the Warriors feeling to remain, but with a Berserk flair, he's even supervised the creation of the game from the very start.

Will the game's story be following alongside the manga's story?

Koinuma: As we did with our "Fist of the North Star" and "Attack on Titan" games, we like to create a story that fans will love yet newcomers can also come and enjoy as if they picked up the very first volume. Berserk Warriors will begin from the Golden Age whereas the anime will pick up from after Guts became a Black Swordsman.

What part of the story are you planning to develop up to?

Koinuma: We plan on cramming a lot of the upcoming anime into the game.

How is development going?

Koinuma: Development is going smoothly.

Will there be plenty of playable characters?

Koinuma: As it's a Warriors game we planned on a number of different playable characters but please wait for more information in the upcoming months.

Will there be any original "Apostles" featured in the game?

Koinuma: The game will feature a whole lot of Berserk and we plan to keep to the story. We never considered adding anything extra into the game.

What CERO rating are you aiming for?

Koinuma: Our policy at Koei is that we will never release a Z rating (18+) game and like "Fist of the North Star" before we managed to get a CERO D (17+) rating.

Will there be anything cut out due to problems etc?

Koinuma: Nothing will be cut. We had to cut a bit in the "Attack on Titan" game, but to be fair, the enemies were giants and that was a difficult task. With Berserk, since there are mainly humans or monsters, anything that may seem difficult we will push through and challenge ourselves in order to make it happen.

Will Gut's arm etc be depicted correctly in game?

Koinuma: Guts will be able to fight with his artificial arm and how you will be able to fight...well.. just wait till we announce it!

Will it have a shaded toon type style similar to "Attack on Titan"?

Koinuma: *picks up main visual cut out* We created this especially for the E3 reveal but we are still brushing it up so there is a chance that it could slightly change.

Any hints of an Online mode?

Koinuma: I can't speak about that at this time, our main focus is on creating an amazing Berserk experience with the story.

Will you be taking over bases similar to the regular Warriors games?

Koinuma: Since that does not happen in the Berserk story, we are instead making it more Berserk-like by making the battles resemble the original material.

Will this game also be made available on Steam?

Koinuma: Koei has always wanted to put out games on multiple platforms and we understand there are a lot of gamers who use Steam and so we plan on considering it an option .

Will the game be released in America on the Xbox One?

Koinuma: We are currently considering Steam and other platforms for Japan at this time.

Koei Tecmo's official website for the upcoming Berserk Musou has been updated with some interesting pieces of information! The biggest news is that the story will start from the Golden Age Arc (as we mentioned in a previous article) and go up to the Falcon of the Millennium Empire Arc.

The game will also have 3D modeled scenes from the animated movies and "other stories" that aren't in the movies. You can check out the translated material below!

Welcome to Berserk Warriors all out skull crushing action!

The over the top "Warriors" action of sending multiple enemies flying all directions meets the glorious and dark world of "Berserk." With his human sized [sword] Dragonslayer, experience the extreme power of Guts as he swings and cuts through the ranks of the Apostles in this "Skull Crushing" new action game.

Relive The Exhilarating Story of Berserk:

The high volume story begins from the very popular "Golden Age" arc onwards as we see we see the man on a revenge mission; Guts and his not so close "partners" battle up to the "Falcon of the Millennium Empire Arc" arc, this truly is an amazing Berserk experience.

3D modeled scenes as well as scenes from the animated movies will be featured among other stories that aren't in the movies. Between members of the Band of the Hawk throughout the full to the brim story contents recreated with the most beautiful of graphics.

Travel Through the Blood Stained Battlefield With a Variety of Characters:

Play as Guts among other famous characters from the manga. Each character will have their own skills and battle styles, bringing a uniqueness to each character as they slash through those who stand in their way.

Voice actors from the animated movies as well as the July anime will beautifully recreate the voices of their characters to further flesh out the true experience of Berserk in Berserk Musou!

The latest issue of Famitsu that released today revealed more information about Koei Tecmo's upcoming Berserk title! In the magazine, the scans detail several Sub-Weapons that are usable in the game along with some insight on the new characters Jude and Casca.

You can check out the translated material below.

Here comes the most violent Warriors game to date, not only do we have skull crushing action but an in-depth story that follows the original story too. In this issue, we delve into the characters and a variety of sub-weapons!

You'll not just be fighting humans this time, with Guts and the other Band of the Hawk members, you'll be cutting through the likes of both beasts and Apostles. However, don't take the Apostles too lightly as they are vastly different in strength to both human and monsters alike. Make sure to watch out for their destructive attacks!

Automatic Bowgun:

A Bowgun that rapidly fires arrows piercing the flesh of the enemy. Keep the enemy at bay and shave down their health before finishing them off. The bowgun is equipped to the left arm, besides this type, there is also a normal Bowgun available in the Golden Age Arc.

Hand Cannon:

Blow away monsters and Apostles alike with the Hand Cannon hidden within Guts' artificial arm. With this, you can control the tide of battle, but remember to equip it beforehand.

Throwing knives:

When Guts was a member of the Band of the Hawk, he was taught by his fellow member Jude the trick to correctly toss knives. They may be weak, but you'll be able to throw many of them at once as well as throwing them in all directions.

Light the fuse, throw it and prepare for a devastating explosion! A small sub-weapon with a huge impact! This weapon delivers a terrifying amount of damage to a massive area, but the downside is that it does take time until the Dynamite explodes after lighting the fuse.

Other Information:

"Berserk Warriors" follows the main Berserk manga's story with Guts and Griffiths including the famous Golden Age Arc. The game's story will also include scenes from the 2012-2013 Berserk anime movies.

As in the original story (and of course in this game), Guts does not yet wield his famous Dragonslayer Greatsword so you'll be able to control the various ages of Guts.

Then came the Black Swordsman...

After he overcame the hell that was the Eclipse, Guts began to burn with hatred and revenge and became the Black Swordsman.

With his Dragonslayer in one hand and an Automatic Bowgun and Hand Cannon attached to the other, Guts goes out to slay the evil spirits of the world.

Apart from Guts there are a variety of other playable characters, next up we have Guts friend and confidant; Griffiths.

Griffiths slices his victims using his skill and a variety of sword abilities accompanying his Sabre. The opposite to Guts's pure power, Griffiths fights with agility and grace as he destroys those in his path.

God Hand Femto:

Then came the Neo Band of the Hawk......

When the Eclipse became to its conclusion Griffiths revived the Band of the Hawk and still continued to do battle wielding his famous Sabre. Although unseen, will Griffiths be able to stand toe to toe in battle with the likes of God Hand Femto?

New Characters Jude and Casca:

Here come two more members of the Band of the Hawk; Jude and Casca.

Finally we have the first playable female character; Casca, although dont look down on her as she is a lot stronger than most swordsmen. She uses her sword and a variety of sword abilities to mow down her enemies.

First up is the guy with an expertise in throwing knives; Jude. Using his cutlass for close proximity battles as well as his throwing knives for ranged battle, Jude is a character that will not have many blind spots!

In this week's issue of Famitsu the magazine brings additional news on Berserk Musou's story as well as two brand new playable characters! Couple of other interesting bits in the article include special events triggered by certain decisions, weapon upgrades and the inclusion of the Conviction Arc. We translated the following material below for your viewing pleasure!

First of all, let's focus on our new playable characters; first up is Schierke (voiced by Saitou Chiwa) the student of the Witch "Flora" who resides at the Mansion of the Spirit Tree. Wielding a variety of magical attacks, she supports Guts as he cleaves his way through the enemy ranks. She has always been suspicious of humans, but after time she has become more understanding of them.

As a witch in training herself, Schierke has control over the elements of Water, Fire, Earth and Wind. Although her magical attacks have a wide area of effect as well as immense power, her major weak point is the time it takes to conjure her spells.

The second character is Serpico (voiced by Okitsu Kazuyuki) the narrow-eyed young man. As one of the most talented humans when it comes to battle, Serpico has sworn his complete allegiance to the nobleman's daughter Farnese.

With his Rapier at his side, Serpico easily defeats his enemies in a flurry of phantasmagoric strikes and puts himself as one of the most agile playable characters in the game.

Various scenes from the 2012-2013 animated movies will play out before each battle throughout Berserk Warriors.

What kind of events will play out after battle!?

Once you have cleared a battle, depending on how the battle went, a special event will begin. For example if in one battle you ignore Caskas orders you will initiate a scene after battle showcasing Caskas getting angry at Guts calling him a "Feral Dog". Various movie scenes or chat scenes will occur based on your actions in battle.

Guts Artificial Arm:

Besides Guts "Dragonslayer" Greatsword, he has various sub-weapons at his disposal. The former Band of the Hawk member and student under the Blacksmith Godo; Rickert will help improve your weapons if you bring him the right materials!

The game will feature the Conviction Arc with Mozgus.
